Primarily, the site of infection is located within the mucosa layers of the stomach and intestinal tract which tends to follow the disturption of the normal flora balance due to antibiotics.  Individuals who already have a compromised immune system are at higher risk of acquiring the Clostridium difficile bacterium.  Active C. difficile can remain in a carrier state within the colon, but may also be transmitted through a fecal-oral route due to contaminated surfaces of objects.
